چکیده

–In this paper we propose a novel media access control (MAC) architecture to support differentiated service in IEEE 802.11 WLAN. By employing the MAC-core as base and different adaptors as add-ons in this architecture, the resulting MAC can provide prioritized services with different delays and throughputs. Our simulation studies show that the resulting MAC protocols based on this architecture can achieve low access delay and high throughput for high priority traffic while maintaining fairness.

Distributed mechanisms for quality of service in wireless LANs

Wireless local area networks (WLAN) are gaining popularity at an unprecedented rate, at home, at work, and in public hot spot locations. As these networks become ubiquitous and an integral part of the infrastructure, they will be increasingly used for multi-media applications. There is limited Quality of Service (QoS) support in WLANs and this will become an impediment in deploying multi-media ...

A framework for efficient resource management in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Currently deployed IEEE 802.11 WLANs work mostly with distributed coordination function (DCF) mode at the media access control (MAC) layer, which does not provide quality of service (QoS) support. The upcoming IEEE standard 802.11e achieves service differentiation by assigning different channel access parameters (CAPs) to different traffic classes at the MAC layer. However, such relative differ...

Study of Quality of Service by using 802.11e

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are one of the fastest growing wireless access technologies. The IEEE 802.11 Standard doesn’t support any QoS mechanisms. IEEE 802.11 MAC layer supports two basic access mechanisms, DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). The EDCA mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides QoS support through service differentiatio...

Performance Evaluation of IEEE802.11e for Industrial Wireless Networks

III Mohsin Hameed Fachhochschule Lippe und Höxter SS 2007 Abstract The advantages of using IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) in industrial automation applications are substantial and include: mobility, ease and speed of installation, flexibility and costs. But wireless applications for industrial automation applications have rigorous requirements on quality of service (QoS) ...

FILLING THE GAPS IN ORDER TO OFFER QoS GUARANTEES IN IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Current IEEE 802.11 standards are not capable of offering Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees to WLAN users. This is mainly due to some gaps existing in their MAC protocol. Even the QoS features of the new extension, IEEE 802.11e draft standard, do not suffice. It still needs connection admission control techniques to avoid saturating the wireless medium and service differentiation in order to ...
